My name is Joey. I help create rainbows. While serving as the top creative at Aspac, I also continue working in Tacloban, Philippines, to help children who have suffered emotional trauma find joy. As readers may recall, in November 2013, the Philippines was struck by Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm ever recorded. Its peak instantaneous wind speed reached 102.7 meters per second. CNN reported it was "stronger than Hurricane Katrina and Sandy combined."
Many children suffered psychological trauma, became orphans, and found themselves in desperate situations. When facing this enormous challenge, I relied on creativity and the children's inherent optimistic strength.
After the typhoon utterly destroyed Tacloban, the port city and gateway to the skies in northeastern Leyte, I vowed to visit the area as soon as possible.
I felt compelled to visit the area as soon as possible. About 100 days after the storm, I finally made it. Witnessing the devastation nearly broke my spirit, but I had an idea. A very positive idea. I want to share that with you.
My career began in the arts. So I paint and sketch. I also teach children the basics of drawing. I desperately wanted to know what the children saw with their own eyes in that desperate situation. I asked a photographer friend for black-and-white photos of the disaster area. My idea was to enlarge those photos and return to Tacloban. I gave crayons to the children and observed what they drew on the black-and-white photos.
What the children drew on those photos of a city shattered everywhere? Rainbows. Clouds. Blue skies. The life-affirming power these children carried within them opened my heart. It was the most valuable experience, the most precious time of my life.
I couldn't let the children's drawings on those photos go to waste. I framed each one and displayed them. I invited clients and held an auction at Christmas. The proceeds were brought back to the children of Tacloban. This small event proved that when creativity connects with the power to affirm life, it unleashes an unparalleled force. That conviction became my daily creed. Create rainbows after the storm. Always. After any storm. Using both my professional and personal life, I create rainbows.
