Norwegian Air Shuttle, Europe's third-largest LCC (low-cost carrier), held a VR (virtual reality) experience event featuring the 5D Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger aircraft at London's largest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City, from December 1st to 14th. (5D combines 3D video with elements like sound, motion, and wind).
Held ahead of the Christmas holiday season, participants donned VR headsets to experience the cabin sounds and movements of a flight from the UK to the US. They then enjoyed a 15-minute 360-degree view of wonderful holidays in three US arrival cities (New York, Los Angeles, Miami), sparking their desire to travel to the US.
Participants also had the chance to win a trip to the United States on the airline's flights by posting about the event on social media with the hashtag #USAtheNorwegianWay.
"We are the first airline to offer a VR experience of a US holiday in the UK," said Stein Steffensen Broek, Vice President of Marketing at the company. "We have succeeded in engaging consumers with our brand in a way that resonates most with them." Founded in 1993, the company has grown to become the second largest airline in the Nordic region after Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and is expanding its flights to the United States and Asia.
MKTG, a subsidiary of Dentsu Inc. Aegis Network, was responsible for the concept, VR production, and event implementation and management, while Vizeum was responsible for media planning, including social media.
