On January 5th, publisher Takarajimasha ran a corporate advertisement titled "Forgetting is a sin." in six major newspapers.
The company began corporate advertising in 1998, wanting to convey through ads the "messages as a company we want to share with society" that couldn't be fully expressed through products. 2017 marked its 20th year.
This year's theme is "World Peace."
The advertisement occupied a 15-column spread, featuring a historical photograph of the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor on the left half and a photograph of the August 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima on the right half.
The tagline reads: "Forgetting is a sin."
It continues: "Humans make mistakes. But they can learn. World peace is humanity's homework."
Regarding the ad's intent, the company noted that over 70 years have passed since the war's end. As the number of war survivors dwindles and generations unfamiliar with war become the majority, 2016 saw the leaders of Japan and the United States mutually visit Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor. Furthermore, 2017 marked the inauguration of President Trump. The UK began full-scale Brexit negotiations, and the refugee crisis was expected to shake nations. In such a changing world, the one constant, the one goal that must never change, is world peace. What can we do? What should we do? The company stated that it hoped this advertisement would serve as an opportunity to reflect on this once again.
