In the United States, the full-scale year-end shopping season begins on the Friday following Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November). It's called Black Friday because it signifies retailers moving into the black (profit).
This shopping season was exported to the UK by American companies like Apple and Amazon, with local retailers such as Asda (under Walmart) and John Lewis also joining in. Since the UK doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, it's localized as an "early Christmas sale."
Online spending in the UK from now until Christmas is projected to reach $8 billion.
