Until a certain time in the Showa era, matches had more uses than they do today... kitchen gas stoves, kerosene heaters, temple altar candles, cigarette lighters, and so on. Matches at cafes (saten) were placed on table ashtrays or beside the cash register, and their attractive designs even attracted collectors. Back then, many people in coffee shops would puff away on cigarettes. The advent of 100-yen lighters may have sealed the fate of the saten matches. In an era without cell phones or smartphones, simply looking at a match could bring back memories of those saten cafes.
