The Newspaper Association updated its color advertising standards and established "NSAC2017."

On June 21, the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association released "NSAC (Nihon Shimbun AdColor) 2017 Ver.1.0," the color standard for newspaper color advertisements. This marks the first update in 11 years since its initial establishment in October 2006.

NSAC is an industry standard designed to minimize color differences between ad artwork color proofs and the actual printed newspaper page, tailored to the printing characteristics of newspapers that produce large volumes quickly. Creating ad artwork compliant with NSAC enhances reproducibility in newspaper pages.

At NSAC2017, colors frequently used in newspaper advertising, such as corporate colors, were added. Additionally, for the first time, a "Digital Output Device Verification Target" was created (sold separately). This target is used for adjusting and verifying inkjet printers that output advertising color proof sheets, simulating the color reproduction of newspaper rotary presses. It is intended for use by advertising production companies and prepress companies.

Approximately ten years have passed since its initial formulation in 2006. Advances in newspaper printing technology, such as high-definition halftone dots and high-density inks, have enabled the publication of high-quality color advertisements, necessitating standards tailored to these characteristics. The standards were developed through test printing by 40 newspapers and repeated verification of the target's appearance as a color reference, along with color data measurement. Cooperation was received from the Japan Advertising Association, the Japan Newspaper Advertising Plate Makers Association, and Sakata Inx during the development process.

Application forms for the "NSAC Kit," which packages the color target and color measurement data, can be downloaded from the Newspaper Association of Japan's "Newspaper Advertising Data Archive" website. The standard kit costs ¥37,000 (excluding tax and shipping), while the optional set of two digital output color targets for digital devices costs ¥25,000 (same).
