[Call for Entries] The Last Heisei and First Reiwa "JAA Advertising Awards" - Call for Entries Now Open!

The Japan Advertisers Association (JAA) has begun accepting entries for the 58th "JAA Advertising Awards: Consumer-Selected Advertising Contest" (sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). The submission deadline is October 1. For contest guidelines, click here.

Eligible advertisements are those aired, displayed, or published between October 1, 2018, and September 30, 2019, across six categories: TV commercials, radio commercials, digital advertisements, outdoor/transportation advertisements, newspaper advertisements, and magazine advertisements.

Ten "Medalists" will be selected from the outstanding entries in each category. From these, the "JAA Award Grand Prix" will be awarded to the best work in each category. Additionally, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award will be presented, along with the Best Partner Award, given to companies and individuals involved in creating the ads that win the JAA Award Grand Prix in each category.

The judging criteria are based on three points: Sensibility (whether it evokes favorability, empathy, and familiarity), Rationality (whether it is easy to understand and convincing), and Creativity (whether it conveys originality).

A key feature of this advertising award is that the judging panel does not include advertising industry professionals. Instead, works submitted by advertisers, media companies, advertising agencies, and production companies—the entities that create the advertisements—are judged by general consumers. The first round of judging involves 100 consumers, while the Grand Prix and medalist selections are judged by 20 consumers.

By recognizing outstanding advertising from the consumer's perspective, the award seeks to explore communication methods relevant to the times and contribute to the healthy development of advertising.

The winners will be announced in mid-January 2020, with the awards ceremony scheduled for February 27 of the same year.
