Miraitowa and Someity Depart for Overseas Tour to Promote "2020beat" (Video Provided)

The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee launched the "Tokyo 2020 'Make The Beat!'" project in September 2019. This initiative encourages spectators from around the world at the Games venues to play the same cheering beat to support the athletes.
The project also solicits videos from the public showing them playing the "2020beat" cheer rhythm. Selected submitted videos will be displayed on screens at competition venues and live sites. This allows people who cannot attend the venues to still participate in building excitement for the Games.

As part of this effort, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic mascots Miraitowa and Someity embarked on an overseas tour to promote "2020beat" worldwide. A departure ceremony was held at Tokyo's Haneda Airport International Terminal on February 19. The tour will run until the end of March, visiting six cities: Barcelona, Paris, Athens, and London—host cities of past Olympics and Paralympics—plus Lausanne, home to the IOC headquarters, and Bonn, home to the IPC headquarters.

At the opening ceremony, Tsugaru shamisen player TENBI added flair by playing beats on the shamisen. TENBI commented, "I enjoyed playing. I'd be happy if people get to know the appeal of the shamisen along with 2020beat during the Games."
Since its launch, the project has featured videos of various artists and celebrities playing beats on its official website. At the venue, a message video from the American idol group Backstreet Boys was introduced.

Olympian volleyball player Megumi Kurihara took the stage. She engaged in a talk with MCs Daiki Tanaka (freelance announcer) and Enka Tsuchiya (2019 Miss Japan Grand Prix), and also attempted a live performance of the support beat.
Kurihara stated, "The Olympics and Paralympics are special events for athletes. Cheering is vital, doubling their power. I want to contribute to the Games in some way."
Finally, Miraitowa and Someity joined in, and everyone performed the Cheer Beat together, wishing for the tour's success.
