The Mainichi Shimbun and Sankei Shimbun published opinion advertisements during "Newspaper Week" (October 15-21). Newspaper Week is held annually in October by the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association to conduct awareness campaigns about newspapers.
The Mainichi Shimbun conveyed the message "Let's love dissent," addressing modern society's tendency to be intolerant of disliked opinions, to attack those different from oneself, and to feel a certain suffocating atmosphere. It stated, "We aim for a society where we do not negate each other's dissenting views, and we deliver diverse perspectives on information," communicating the role of newspapers.

The Sankei Shimbun's message was "Just for you being alive." Amidst challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, it appealed to each individual to "live," stating, "Just because you are alive, something is born," and "We want the one and only you in this world to live." Through its newspaper advertisement, it conveyed the "importance of life."
