[Free Webinar] "LGBTQ+ Survey 2020 Information Sharing Session" to be Held

Dentsu Inc. conducted the "LGBTQ+ Survey 2020" on sexual minorities, including LGBT individuals. A webinar to share the survey results will be held on April 8.

This survey was jointly conducted in December 2020 by Dentsu Inc. Diversity Lab, an organization specializing in research, analysis, and solution development in the diversity and inclusion field, and the PR Solutions Division. It targeted a total of 60,000 individuals aged 20 to 59 nationwide. While the "LGBT Survey" was previously conducted three times in 2012, 2015, and 2018, this edition was renamed the "LGBTQ+ Survey" to include detailed analysis of diverse sexualities. For the first time, the survey also presents results categorizing how the straight population (heterosexual individuals whose gender identity aligns with the sex assigned at birth) feels about LGBTQ+, classified into six distinct clusters.

Part 1 will provide an overview of the survey results. Part 2 will feature a talk session with Fumino Sugiyama, Co-Representative Director of Tokyo Rainbow Pride, and Shinichiro Kumagai, Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology. They will discuss trends in LGBTQ+ public opinion, future challenges, and expectations based on the survey findings.

Fumino Sugiyama (Co-Representative Director, Tokyo Rainbow Pride, Specified Nonprofit Corporation)
Born in Tokyo in 1981. Former Japanese national women's fencing team member. Transgender. Completed a master's degree at Waseda University Graduate School of Education. Traveled to approximately 50 countries worldwide + Antarctica during two years of backpacking, confronting various social issues locally. Co-representative director of Tokyo Rainbow Pride, Japan's largest LGBT Pride parade, and involved in establishing Japan's first same-sex partnership ordinance in Shibuya Ward. Also serves as a member of the Shibuya Ward Gender Equality and Diversity Society Promotion Council. Currently striving as a father raising children.

Shinichiro Kumagai (Associate Professor, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo)
Developed cerebral palsy shortly after birth, resulting in limited use of his limbs. Attended regular schools from elementary through high school. After graduating from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine, worked as a pediatrician for 10 years. Engages in "participant research" studying the relationship between disability and society.

Representative, Dentsu Inc. Diversity Lab. Oversees and advances all 20 projects undertaken by the lab while engaging broadly with diversity and inclusion. Handles all client proposals, networking with internal/external organizations, universities, media, etc.

Ms. Taeko Yoshimoto (Researcher, Dentsu Inc. PR Solutions Bureau / Dentsu Inc. Diversity Lab)
As a researcher at the Diversity Lab, she led the 2018 LGBT Survey. She analyzes public opinion surrounding LGBT issues and insights from those directly involved, contributing to media pieces on LGBT topics and delivering lectures.
After working for 8.5 years as a consultant at a Japanese PR firm, she moved to the U.S. She worked for approximately 2 years at a diverse PR firm in New York while studying American marketing, then joined Dentsu Inc. in 2017. She has handled numerous global PR projects.

Ayaka Asami (Dentsu Inc. Diversity Lab)
Strategic Planner. Provides solutions including strategies, initiatives, and ideas on diversity for companies and executives, alongside conducting numerous trainings, lectures, and writing contributions. Conducted Japan's only large-scale LGBT survey (as of 2012 and 2015) examining challenges surrounding LGBT individuals in Japan and consumption patterns centered around the LGBT community. Involved in developing multiple diversity projects, such as initiatives aiming for accessible acoustic environments and projects addressing diverse family structures.
