Google announced on July 1st its acquisition of Songza, a free streaming music service. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Songza is known for its service that delivers music curated based on user behavior and time of day. Google stated, "It's a great service where experts select music perfect for the moment. We have no plans to change the content for the time being."
Google launched its own music streaming service within Google Play last year and was preparing similar functionality on its video-sharing site YouTube. Integration between Songza and Google Play/YouTube services is now under consideration.
As the mainstream shifts from purchasing individual songs or albums to streaming-based music services like Pandora and Spotify, the battle for dominance intensifies. Apple acquired Beats Electronics for a hefty $3 billion in May, and Amazon launched its music streaming service "Prime Music" in June.
