Looking toward 2020. And beyond. Where should Japan aim? What would be desirable? In this year, where the importance of diversity seems increasingly emphasized, I want to start by listening to diverse opinions.
Our featured guests are 15 individuals originally from overseas who now reside in Japan. From both an external and internal perspective, and through the professional lens of their respective fields, they have expressed insightful and diverse keywords through the art of calligraphy.

I came to Japan at 19 and learned a great deal from Japan's culture of "endurance." In work, persevering no matter how long it takes is admirable. I truly respect endurance in a positive sense. But staying behind just because others are still there when your own work is done, or not voicing your opinion—that's the kind of endurance I consider harmful. I want you to become more open-minded and challenge yourself to step out of your safe world, your narrow comfort zone of self-satisfaction. Speak your mind, even little by little. Look at things from outside your zone. Then, something new will be born. For myself, it was precisely because I stepped out of that zone that I could create new expressions with flowers and build my own value. There's a reward for challenging yourself. I highly recommend it.
