The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held the third "IOC-Tokyo 2020 Project Review" in Tokyo on February 4 and 5. This meeting, where the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and the Organising Committee assess the Games' preparation status, follows the second review conducted last November.
At a press briefing held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building on the 5th, John Coates, Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad (Tokyo 2020), stated, "This time, we continued discussions on the venue master plan. We also had constructive discussions regarding the ability of the Organizing Committee to propose new sports to the IOC under the Olympic Agenda 2020." He also commended the Organizing Committee on securing two Gold Partners for the Games and on plans for the "2020 Days Countdown Event."
Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori stated, "The meeting comprehensively reviewed Tokyo's efforts regarding Agenda 2020, including the addition of sports, the utilization of existing and temporary facilities, and budget efficiency." He also revealed that the Organizing Committee reported to the IOC that it is considering changing the main venue for equestrian events to the Japan Equestrian Park in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, and that while the gymnastics arena will be built as planned, it will explore effective utilization strategies for the future. Furthermore, Chairman Mori mentioned that the use of the Japan Cycle Sports Center (CSC) in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is being considered for the cycling venue, and expressed the desire to propose all venues by the IOC Executive Board meeting in April.
Chairman Coates expressed the view that the decision on new sports would be made after receiving proposals in September, followed by consideration from various perspectives, with final approval expected at the IOC Session in August 2016.
