Singapore★Local Good Design Awards: Grand Prize Goes to Mixed-Use Development "South Beach"

The winners of the Singapore Good Design Mark (SG Mark), organized by the Designers' Body of Singapore (DBCS), were announced on the 17th. This is Singapore's own comprehensive design evaluation and recommendation system, modeled after Japan's Good Design Award. Now in its third year, this year's judging placed particular emphasis on designs conscious of environmental protection. Sixty-one entries were selected from 96 submissions from both domestic and international sources.

According to NNA, which distributes Asian economic and business information, the top Platinum Award went to "South Beach," a mixed-use development project on Beach Road in the city center, undertaken by Singapore's major real estate developer City Developments Limited (CDL) and Malaysia's real estate developer IOI Group.

The project incorporates numerous environmentally friendly architectural designs. It features a 280-meter-long canopy that provides shade and ventilation while also housing solar panels that power the LED lighting. Additionally, it promotes rooftop greening. The entire building can save up to 17 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 174,000 cubic meters of water annually. DBCS Chairman Tai Li-shan stated, "The entire building is constructed with environmental protection in mind. Its blend of old and new design elements to create a unique atmosphere is also appealing."

The Gold Awards, following the Platinum Award, were given to three projects: the multi-purpose industrial estate "JTC Space@Tuas" developed by industrial estate operator JTC Corp; Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore's fourth public university; and the application for OCBC Bank's children's savings service "Mighty Savers".

The SG Mark accepts submissions across three categories—"Lifestyle," "Industry," and "Public"—each divided into "Product" (hardware category) and "Communication" (software category). Similar to Japan's Good Design Award, it accepts entries from a wide range of fields, including industrial products, services, buildings, and applications, regardless of whether they are tangible or intangible. Both local and foreign companies and organizations are eligible for evaluation.

Applicants hailed not only from Singapore but also from across Asia, including Malaysia and Hong Kong. Past winners include products that have also received Japan's Good Design Award. The future goal is to further raise the SG Mark's recognition across Asia, helping companies and organizations expand business opportunities such as overseas market development and securing investment. Award-winning SG Mark products and projects will be exhibited at the National Design Centre (NDC) in central Singapore from the 17th until June 30th.

■Japanese Experts Also Serve as Judges

The Japan Institute of Design Promotion, which operates the Good Design Award, has established a cooperative relationship with Singapore through initiatives like establishing a design evaluation system, dispatching judges, and organizing exhibitions. This year, Chihiro Sasaki, CEO of Infield Design, which handles design projects and also serves as a judge for the Good Design Award, participated as one of five judges in the SG Mark's second-round judging.
