Paper airplanes used to be a simple childhood pastime, made from newspaper flyers and the like. Entering this era was the "Well-Flying Paper Airplane" by former NTT engineer Yasuaki Ninomiya.

Cut out the parts from Kent paper according to the diagram, then glue them together. The result is a high-performance paper airplane that can stay airborne for nearly a minute. It captured the hearts of children of the Showa era who had only known flimsy paper planes.

Even today, the Niinomi Yasuaki Cup All-Japan Paper Airplane Championship is held annually. Paper airplanes have also become a pastime for adults who retain a boyish spirit.
