Today, even Tokyo's condominiums are towering high-rises, but skyscrapers first appeared in the 1960s. The first skyscraper built in Nishi-Shinjuku was the Keio Plaza Hotel. Later, the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building (commonly known as the Triangle Building) and the Shinjuku Mitsui Building opened. People would wait in line for elevators just to see the view from these skyscrapers.

The beauty of the night view, in particular, was breathtaking.

Today, beautiful illuminations color the night not just in Tokyo but across Japan. Yet, the impact of that first 360-degree view of the metropolis's nightscape—Tokyo Tower included—from the high-rises near Shinjuku's West Exit remains an indescribable memory.

(Story from a woman in her 60s, living in Tokyo at the time)
