"Dentsu Inc. creates a future without precedent."
Nice to meet you. I'm Tadashi Kodama from the Recruitment and Development Department of the Human Resources Bureau. As the name suggests, I'm primarily responsible for new graduate recruitment within the team.
Graduate recruitment is broadly divided into two phases: "recruitment communications" (hereafter "communications") targeting students interested in Dentsu Inc., and the "selection" process for identifying talent capable of thriving at Dentsu Inc. Let's start with "communications."
To begin PR, we develop concepts aligned with each recruitment strategy to clearly convey what Dentsu Inc. is as a company to students.
For the 2012-2013 period, we used the tagline "Work that moves people's hearts. Anything is possible." This emphasized that the essence of Dentsu Inc.'s work is moving people's hearts and solving clients' challenges, and that the possibilities for how we achieve this are limitless depending on our own initiatives. For FY2014-2015, we used "You become the seed of inspiration." to convey that with purpose and effort, there exists a field where one's passions and interests – the "seeds" – can blossom into work – the "flowers." FY2016-2017 featured "Because there are no answers, there is Dentsu Inc." This highlighted Dentsu Inc. as the entity that solves challenges lacking "absolute correct answers" through wisdom and ideas.
Then, for FY2018 and FY2019, the concept is 'Dentsu Inc. creates a future without precedent.'
For this concept development, employees active on the front lines across all departments gathered company-wide. We started by envisioning Dentsu Inc.'s future and the talent needed to build it. The future of Dentsu Inc., as seen through the diverse perspectives of employees from each department, was remarkably varied. Yet, one symbolic image emerged that everyone agreed upon: "For example, partnering with 100 companies with promising futures to launch 100 new businesses."
Dentsu Inc.'s clients span a wide range, from large corporations to startups, media companies, and content holders. Virtually any stakeholder could potentially become a Dentsu Inc. client. As times change, so do clients. Even with the same client, circumstances are constantly shifting. Recent years have seen remarkable technological advancement, and the scope of solutions is expected to diversify further.
Amidst this, we defined Dentsu Inc.'s mission as exceeding client expectations—and continuing to exceed them. To envision, articulate, and realize futures our clients couldn't have imagined. To create unprecedented futures as a result. This, we believed, was the ideal state Dentsu Inc. should strive for.
We defined the talent we seek as individuals who can flexibly adapt to changing times and genuinely enjoy continually exceeding client expectations. In other words, people whose work ethic embodies a 'desire to exceed expectations' are the individuals we seek, and working backwards from this, we developed the concept: "Dentsu Inc. creates unprecedented futures."
Students with "Ideas × Execution Power" – We Want You!
The world is full of diverse students, each with wonderful qualities, making it incredibly difficult to describe in a single phrase what kind of student we want. However, at job seminars and company information sessions, we tell students that the qualities required of an Dentsu Inc. are "Ideas × Execution Power."
First, let's explain the first part: "Ideas." When people hear "ideas," they often imagine right-brain concepts like "unimaginable, unique concepts" or "genius-level creativity." But in reality, steady effort, accumulated experience, a scientific perspective, and logical thinking are absolutely essential. Ideas are born from this hybrid thinking that combines both right and left brain. Pushing your mind to its limits, drawing not just on existing "knowledge" but also on untapped "wisdom" to solve problems and create unprecedented futures is an incredibly exciting, rewarding, and stimulating experience. For those who want to pursue this throughout their careers, Dentsu Inc. offers a highly attractive field.
Regarding the second point, "Execution Power." This is the ability to turn "ideas" into tangible reality, preventing them from remaining mere theoretical constructs. The planning skills, creative abilities, proposal skills, negotiation skills, and production capabilities that Dentsu Inc. employees demonstrate across departments—all of these are underpinned by tenacious execution power. It involves gaining buy-in for ideas from people with diverse knowledge and networks, then harnessing that collective power. Without this execution capability—which includes the interpersonal skill to rally others—ideas remain mere theoretical concepts. Only after gritty trial and error and hard work do ideas finally take shape, solving client and societal challenges or leading to businesses that create the future.
What we seek are individuals who possess both "ideas × execution power." We believe it is essential to have the ability to identify the fundamental challenges faced by clients and devise solutions, coupled with the execution power to see things through to the end with responsibility.
A common question from students
I'm Yanuma from the New Graduate Recruitment Team. Here, I'll briefly share some questions students frequently ask me at events like information sessions. During our daily participation in job seminars and company presentations, we encounter a wide variety of questions—often personal ones too. At a recent session, I was asked about my best golf score and panicked (laughs).
A question we hear frequently lately is about the difference between us and "consulting firms." Since Dentsu Inc. is a company that solves societal and client challenges, we may indeed share similarities with consulting firms or general trading companies in terms of the "problem-solving" axis. However, I believe Dentsu Inc.'s strength lies in the fact that our approach to solving problems is enhanced by "ideas" that move people's hearts.
Another common question from science students is, "Can I thrive at Dentsu Inc.?" I think this stems from the perception that Dentsu Inc. is a humanities-oriented company, but our answer is a resounding "YES." In fact, we warmly welcome you. While "science" encompasses a wide range of specializations, the logical thinking, analytical skills, ability to quantify metrics, technical application sense, hypothesis-building, and problem-setting capabilities common to science students are precisely what can be leveraged in Dentsu Inc.'s core business of solving problems. In fact, over 30% of Dentsu Inc.'s new hires come from science backgrounds, and about 60% of them have completed master's programs. Dentsu Inc. offers a wide range of fields where both liberal arts and science graduates can thrive.
