The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Sports and Culture Foundation will hold the fourth annual "Road to Tomorrow 1000km Relay 2016" (Special Cooperation: Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games; Sponsors: Japan Airlines, ASICS, Kinki Nippon Tourist, Nippon Life Insurance, Mizuho Financial Group) from July 24 to August 7, 2016—a 15-day period marking four years before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This relay will traverse approximately 1,280 km (planned) across 163 sections from Aomori to Tokyo, covering areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Participants will connect the route via relay-style running and cycling. By passing the relay sash, the event aims to communicate recovery efforts and the current state of the disaster-affected areas, prevent the fading of memories of the disaster, and deepen the bonds between participants gathering from across Japan and the people of the affected regions.

Its slogan is: "Run through the land of recovery. Run alongside recovery. Run toward the future."

This year, many top athletes and celebrities will participate. Additionally, "Fureai Running" sections will be set up, open to all regardless of disability or age. Attractions include running alongside athletes, mini-running clinics, and collaborative events with local communities.

This year's relay ambassadors include former marathon runner Naoko Takahashi, former track and field athlete Nobuharu Asahara, and professional wheelchair tennis player Shingo Kunieda. They will participate in the relay and conduct promotional activities.

The event is recruiting approximately 1,100 participants (1,000 runners, 100 cyclists) for the period from May 11 to June 12. For details, visit the official website ( http://www.1000km.jp/ ).
