KDDI held "Oni-chan and Bean-Throwing NIGHT 2017" at The Garden Hall in Meguro Ward, Tokyo, on February 3rd.
On the day, 200 students selected by lottery attended and enjoyed Setsubun festivities with actor Masaki Suda, who plays "Oni-chan" in au's "Santaro Series" TV commercials. The company had announced "au's Student Discount Heaven," offering services appealing to students, at a January press conference.
During the opening, amid chants of "Oni-chan!", Suda appeared in his commercial costume against a backdrop of laser beams. Attendees wearing matching Oni horns erupted in cheers, leaving Suda surprised: "Everyone's way too energetic! This is the first Oni gathering ever~". He didn't forget to promote the Student Discount Heaven, stating, "The repair support is a really helpful service, it's like adding fuel to the fire." In "Oni-chan's Life Advice," students seeking guidance on school life and job hunting received direct advice from Mr. Suda, leaving them visibly moved.
The new commercial "True Love Dars... True Love?" premiering on the 6th was shown early at the venue.
The commercial begins with Oni-chan telling his friends he's started selling chocolate as a side job. While Momotaro and Urashima Taro brag about receiving "true love chocolates," the conversation turns to the absent Kintaro. Kintaro receives chocolate from the "person overseas" he has feelings for, but mistakenly thinks "Home-made" means "true love" and gets wildly excited.
The chocolate featured in the commercial, "True Love Dars," is a collaboration with Morinaga Confectionery's classic "Dars" chocolate. It can be obtained by answering a questionnaire at au stores. At the event, a raffle for autographed "True Love Dars" by Mr. Suda was held, creating a huge buzz.
For the main event, after Mr. Suda threw beans toward the audience, everyone then threw beans at a large balloon hanging from the ceiling, chanting "Fuku wa uchi! Oni mo uchi!" (Good fortune in! Demons in too!). When the balloon burst, releasing balloons and streamers, the venue erupted in the loudest cheers of the day.
Suda shared his New Year's resolution: "With au's 'Let's try it!' spirit, I want to challenge myself in everything," before posing for a commemorative photo with everyone.
The event concluded with a special live performance by rock band WANIMA. They played songs including "Let's Try It," featured in the "Spring Door: Let's Try It" campaign broadcast since the start of the year. This track is a rock arrangement of the children's song "Picnic," and the powerful stage performance energized the entire venue.
