At the opening, calligrapher Shishu presented the Japan Pavilion's theme, "Harmonious Diversity," through a live performance. Hiroyuki Ishige, President of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), representing the organizers, stated, "We aim to demonstrate how Japan can contribute to alleviating and solving global food issues, while introducing the diverse cultures surrounding Japanese cuisine." Masahira Fukui, the Japan Pavilion's general producer, explained, "The theme embodies the message that Japan's wisdom and techniques regarding food can contribute to humanity and a coexisting society." He revealed that the logo mark was designed using Japan's unique "celebration chopsticks," symbolizing hospitality, as its motif.
Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 S.p.A., the organizer of the Milan Expo, appealed in a video message, "Japan is an important partner. Let us walk together and join forces to make this exposition a reality."
On stage, the appointment ceremony for Japan Pavilion supporters took place. Singer and model Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Shishu, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Visiting Associate Professor Sakana-kun, and the official characters of the 2005 Aichi Expo, Morizo and Kikkoru, took the stage. They were presented with appointment certificates and pins by Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Yoshimasa Hayashi and Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Midori Matsushima. Minister Hayashi stated, "500 days will pass in the blink of an eye. I hope you will use your influence to spread information throughout Japan and around the world."
Following this, an "Exhibitor Presentation Ceremony" was held with attendees from political and business circles, related organizations, and sponsoring companies. They prayed for the expo's success with a sake barrel breaking ceremony and a toast.
