A seminar commemorating the publication of Nick Barley's book, How Japan Won the Olympics! Presentation Skills that Move the World (NHK Publishing, released February 26), was held on February 20 at Roppongi Academy Hills in Minato Ward, Tokyo. Barley served as a consultant for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee and is known as a key figure in the successful bid.
Mr. Barley is the founding partner and CEO of Seven46, a London-based international sports consultancy. As a strategic consultant, he led three consecutive successful bids: London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2020.
One of the major factors in the successful bid was the final presentation. Although Japanese people tend to think they are "not good at presentations," Mr. Barley, who worked on the presentation, taught us that even people who are not good at presentations can give convincing presentations on the international stage and lead to success. He shared "Nick's strategy for successful presentations," including behind-the-scenes stories from the final presentation, explaining what kind of communication is successful on the global stage and what is necessary to express one's opinions and persuade others in daily business.
He outlined seven strategies: DO THE MATH/Start with the numbers; KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE/Understand your audience; MAKE AN IMPACT/Create an impact; KEEP MAKING IMPACT/Sustain the impact; BE VISUAL/Appeal to the senses; BE VISIONARY/Have a clear vision; and PERFORM/Perform.
