FIFA World Cup Four-Nation Awareness Survey What's your prediction?

Video Research Ltd. conducted a survey in four countries, including Japan, regarding the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, which kicks off in June, and announced the results on May 22.

The target countries were "Japan," "Greece" (which shares the same qualifying group as Japan), the host nation "Brazil," and "Italy" (boasting the second-most World Cup titles after Brazil). The survey examined how citizens of each country perceive this tournament.

調査対象

1. Predicted Performance of National Teams

自国代表の成績予想

In both Japan and Greece, the most common prediction was that their national teams would reach only the Round of 16. Even if they advance past the group stage, they would likely face one of the top two teams from Italy's group in their first knockout match, making progression difficult.

In powerhouse Italy, expectations for the national team are harsh, with 40% predicting a quarterfinal exit—the most common forecast. This likely stems from the expectation that a quarterfinal opponent would be either Brazil, the top contender from Group A, or Spain, the top contender from Group B.
Brazil, with its record five World Cup titles and home-field advantage, is predicted to win by over 70% of respondents.

2. National Predictions for the Winning Team

Brazil was the top choice for the winner in all four countries surveyed. Furthermore, Spain was ranked in the top three by every country, suggesting many anticipate a Brazil vs. Spain final.

3. Top Scorer Predictions

All nationalities listed Lionel Messi (Argentina) in their top three.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Brazil's star player Neymar are also among the top candidates for top scorer. The survey also revealed results on which of the eight qualifying groups is considered the luckiest and the likelihood of advancing from the group stage.
