Ad Age reports that Facebook launched a new live video streaming feature on August 5. With the release of the mobile video streaming app Meerkat and Twitter's Periscope this spring attracting attention, Facebook's move was eagerly anticipated. Facebook's live streaming feature will initially be limited to celebrities and will be operated in conjunction with Mentions, an app for celebrities with profile verification that was introduced last year.
Jason Stein, CEO of US digital agency Laundry Service, commented, "Live concert streams by artists and training sessions by popular athletes are popular content on Meerkat and Periscope. For example, U2 is one of the artists actively using Meerkat. Facebook is naturally studying this trend." There has been no mention of the service being made available to the general public at this time.

American professional wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson and others are already broadcasting live.
